E-Book: Brutality of Mountain Dog Training

So you can grow even faster!

I’m John Meadows, Bodybuilder, coach, and owner of mountaindogdiet.com. People often ask me what I am doing with my clients to pile up so much muscle on them so quickly.

Many rumors persist about how I prep my champions ranging from plausible to the outright ridiculous. Today, I am going to let you in on my unique training system that delivers results regardless of gender, training age, or genetic disadvantages and the best part is that this method of training can be used all year round regardless of your desired training goal.

I never understood why coaches would use only a certain rep range, or only progressive resistance for example, when we know there are multiple pathways that lead to hypertrophy. Why limit yourself to just one? Why not exploit all pathways that we know of! The Mountain Dog training philosophy is based on a radical approach to training where you perform a series of 4 unique micro workouts within a given session. This accomplishes that goal.

Having worked with hundreds of bodybuilders through my coaching career, I’ve come to the conclusion that “one size fits all” recommendations often fall short when it comes to getting the most out of my athletes.

This revelation forced me to go back and look through the programs I wrote over the years that worked best and through careful examination, I discovered that my best programs all had 4 elements in common. Not only were they present, but I had these elements sequenced in a way that made sense and would lead to optimal results.

Rather than periodize each of these elements over the long haul of an athletes program, potentially losing out on a training effect as I moved from one to the other, I decided to do something unheard of and incorporate all 4 elements within one workout “officially” in 2010, and have never looked back, only further refining the approach every year.

and that’s how the 4 Phase approach was brought to life

Phase 1 – The Pre-Pump Activation
One specific exercise that’s:
Easy on your joints, tendons and ligaments
Uncomplicated to perform
Allows you to really feel the target muscle(s) working and start driving blood and nutrients into the muscle
Phase 2 – The “Explosive” Exercise
A secondary movement (often large compound movement) that allows you to:
Ignite your central nervous system
Target high threshold fibers
Perform complex movement while feeling fresh
Phase 3 – The Supra-Maximal Pump
A more traditional bodybuilding style movement that historically has been shown to:
Create high levels of growth-inducing metabolic stress
Increase satellite cell proliferation
Tap into type II muscle fibers which have a greater potential for growth
Phase 4 – The Loaded Stretch
This is the fourth and final micro workout used within The Mountain Dog workout. This clincher set stretches connective tissue surrounding your muscles, arguably giving your muscles more room to grow (this is debatable), or it may cause some sort of protective mechanism that leads to increased protein synthesis. This falls under the category of something I know works from seeing it in hundreds upon hundreds of cases, but we aren’t 100% sure of all the mechanisms involved.

“Mountain Dog training revolutionized my training and breathed new life into my bodybuilding career. After 20 years of competitive bodybuilding I’ve tried countless training methods with varying degrees of success, but nothing returned sustained improvements without injuries compared to John’s. At 38 I’m training harder, longer and with more enthusiasm than I did in my 20’s. Brutal, intense, masochistically-fun, results-oriented workouts define my personal experience working with John Meadows.”

– Mark Dugdale, IFBB Professional Bodybuilder

“I started reading John’s material years ago and became an instant fan of his. With his knowledge and expertise in the field I was far beyond impressed and I know he is the guy to take me to the next level in my career and this is why I have hired him as my coach.

John Meadows is a walking/talking bodybuilding encyclopedia, and after 15 years of training and competing in the highest level possible(including the Olympia) I am still learning something new every time I talk to him. His training methods are revolutionary, insightful, and most importantly they are producing results.

– Amit Sapir, IFBB Professional Bodybuilder
