A deeper look at chronic pain and irritation at one of the largest joints in the body, the knee. Similarly to the elbow, the knee joint is also a common painful site in strength athletes due to the same heavy and frequent training focus on the tissues surrounding this joint that tends to piss off the elbow.
This month we will be focusing on another commonly painful area of the body for strength and aesthetics athletes, the knee joint. The health benefits of being lean(er) hardly need discussion, but maintenance of a lean state once fat loss has been achieved is probably the most difficult part of the process. One of the most irritating consequences of a long term caloric deficit is the concomitant decrease in metabolic rate (due decreases in circulating leptin, loss of lean mass, etc.).
Some things in life are inevitable; paying taxes, lying in a grave and of course nagging injuries secondary to heavy strength and hypertrophy training.
Whether you have spent the better part of two decades on your back crushing set after set of high repetition skull crushers or you merely tweaked your elbow during a max effort bench press and have never been the same since, elbow pain can be a lingering pain in the ass!
